Kent felt as if he was in a dream. A good one. The truth was he’d had this dream many times before. And now the torrent of emotion that came forth excited and soothed him somehow. He pulled her to him, exploring deeper and deeper inside of her. He felt her body tense and then give everything of herself over to him, her breath shallow, as he continued slow and deliberate until he felt her reach another crescent. Finally, when he couldn’t hold back anymore, he came, crying out her name.

Susa slid from under him, and when Kent caught his breath, he turned sideways on the ripple of sheets to face her. She gazed at him, a look he couldn’t define on her face.

“I see things going through you mind.”

Susa nodded.

“What is it?” Kent asked, wanting to read her mind.

Susa’s eyes searched his face.

“I wasn’t kidding when I said I’d dreamed about this many times.”

Susa got a puzzled look on her face. “You meant that?”

Kent moved closer, until they were inches apart. “Yes. You don’t believe me?”

“I just thought…”

“What?”

“I just figured you’ve probably had so many girlfriends over the years. I mean. Oh, I don’t know what I mean.”

Kent reached and pulled her hard against him, his lips against Susa’s when a phone buzzed.

They pulled apart.

“I’m afraid not to answer.” Susa climbed out of bed and went across the room to get her phone. “Hermann, where are you?”

At the look of horror on her face, Kent bound out of bed to her. She pressed the speaker phone button.

“Bring us the diamonds, he won’t lose any more fingers,” said a man as someone cried out in pain in the background.

“Stop hurting him, please.” Susa begged and began to sob. “Where do you want me to bring them?”

“I’ll call back tomorrow with instructions. You bring the police into this, he dies.” The line went dead.

By now, tears streamed down Susa’s cheeks.

“Hermann is going to be fine. I promise you,” Kent said, wrapping his arms around a sobbing Susa. “We’ll talk to Joey and figure this thing out.”

“He said no police.”

“They always say that. We can trust Joey. Everything is going to be okay.”

“What about his fingers?” She shivered. Her large eyes were filled with pain.

“They were probably bluffing, to get you to comply.”

She nodded, lifting her chin and taking on a resolute look.

He took out his phone and dialed Joey’s number. “It’s me,” said Kent.

“You hear from Hermann?”

Kent explained the call they just got.

“Damnit. I’ve checked with all my sources. Nothing. I was going to visit that German gemologist tomorrow, but I have to be in court in the morning, and it could take all day.”

“How about me and Susa go?”

“I don’t know about that.”

“Look, we’re running against time here.”

Joey sighed, then gave Kent the gemologist’s address with some pointers on getting information out of the man.
